Ruby Urlocker is an accomplished visual artist and writer in her second year of Fine Arts at Centennial. Her aesthetic ranges from brightly colored, whimsical illustrations of young girls in nature, to dark and fascinating themes related to death and mental illness. This year she has been mostly focused on illuminating events that happened in her past, through artwork. Her graphic novel, Returning to Rainbows, is a multi-layered and fascinating tale of what it means to be young and in love and what it means to grow up.

This artistic piece shown below is a graphic novel encompassing the major years of my adolescence, during which things took a dark turn. The narrative focuses on my self identity, first when it blossomed, and then when it was torn apart by malevolent forces originating in my imagination. I have been influenced by the autobiographical cartoons in Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, a graphic novel detailing the morbid and humorous journey of a young girl’s life, as well as by Emily Caroll’s Through the Woods with its spooky illustrations of fairy tales.
